Hi @coingecko
Wow. I read the news that talks about monero and his platform that was hacked, very unfortunate for all who are affected by that, sincerely I would not want to be in the shoes of those people.

There are ways a user can mitigate this from happening, even when a trusted source gets compromised.
As the saying goes in Crypto, Don't Trust, Verify.
Open source software usually provides a Checksum in their release notes of which users can hash the downloaded software to compare against.
Feel free to start your research with the article we recommend.

Whew! I got lucky there. I almost downloaded the Monero wallet the other day. Good thing I didn't. Nice wake-up call for me to check the checksums!

I was reading about the Monero issue. With things like wallets you need to really be sure the software is not tampered with. Even a CRC is not reliable unless it's signed. People need to be really careful. I heard someone lost a lot coin to this.

That is why we always recommend everyone to not Trust, but Verify.
If a user would compare the Checksum of the compromised download, they would have found something fishy real quick.
Someone did comfirmed loss of coins on Twitter due to this incident.
